BP boss Tony Hayward among FTSE’s top earners

BP chief executive Tony Hayward's pay rose by 26% to £3.2 million last year, making him one of the best-paid bosses in the Footsie.

Most of Hayward's increase came from a performance-related bonus, after BP was the only oil major to grow profit year-on-year at fourth-quarter results.

He could also scoop a £7.2 million bonus if BP hits certain financial and environmental targets by 2012.

The oil giant's annual report reveals that its new chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg, who in January replaced Peter Sutherland on the board, scooped a 25% pay rise on his predecessor's £600,000 salary.

The Swede's £750,000 a year makes him one of the UK's best-paid, part-time directors.

Svanberg, who was previously chief executive at telecoms giant Ericsson, also received £100,000 to cover the expense of leaving his home in Stockholm for London.

In addition, BP furnishes him with a chauffered car, security advice and "secretarial support" in both London and Sweden.

American Robert Dudley was another big earner at BP last year.

After joining as managing director for the Americas and Asia last February, Dudley, who was the former chief executive of BP's Russian joint venture TNK-BP, earned $2.2 million (£1.4 million) last year.

His region was crucial to Hayward's attempt to repair the tarnished BP brand, which was hit by the Texas City fire, Alaskan pipeline spills and US propylene-trading "irregularities".

Since joining the board, Svanberg has hired ex-McKinsey partner Ian Davis and Paul Anderson, the former chief executive of BHP Billiton.

City veteran Sir Ian Prosser and ex-Amoco director Erroll Davis are leaving this year.
