Ads chiefs call for more spending

Advertising bosses today attacked the Government’s approach to the industry, saying ministers “have lost sight of the fact that advertising is an indispensable engine of growth”.

BT Retail chief executive Gavin Patterson, president of the Advertising Association, urged the coalition to lead by example by increasing its marketing spend and ease back on the drastic cuts seen after the 2010 general election.

Patterson told the AA summit in King’s Cross, attended by Culture Secretary Maria Miller, that the Government should “hit the accelerator, not the brake”, pointing to new research from Deloitte showing that advertising contributed £100 billion a year to the UK economy.
