Forty years after end of the war, and McDonald’s is set to open in Vietnam

16 July 2013

It has already conquered most of the world. Now McDonald’s is about to set up shop in Ho Chi Minh City — 40 years after US troops pulled out of the Vietnam War.

The American fast-food giant has appointed businessman Henry Nguyen to help it sell Big Mac and fries to the Vietnamese. Nguyen will be a “developmental licensee” to build the brand, and will open an outlet in the city early next year.

Vietnam will be the 38th Asian country in which McDonald’s operates, but one of its most significant given the history between the two countries. Other US brands already operating there include Subway, KFC and Pizza Hut.

McDonald’s now has more than 34,500 outlets across the world, serving more than 69 million customers in more than 100 countries each day.

“I have been a big fan of McDonald’s my whole life and have had so many wonderful experiences there, including one of my first jobs when I was a teenager,” said Nguyen, who is the son-in-law of Vietnam’s prime minister.

“I have dreamed of one day opening a McDonald’s restaurant in my native country ever since my return to Vietnam more than a decade ago. I have been in contact with McDonald’s over the years.”
