Key figure Benjamin Southworth leaves government's Tech City scheme

One of leaders of the government’s Tech City initiative is stepping down after just twelve months in the job.

Tech City Investment Organisation (TCIO) deputy chief executive Benjamin Southworth today announced he is leaving to pursue personal projects when his contract expires in August. He was appointed last July by David Cameron’s technology advisor Rohan Silva.

TCIO provides support for London’s technology businesses and Southworth was charged with liaising with the capital’s start-up community and overseeing the organisation while a new chief executive was found.

Former Facebook executive Joanna Shields took up the role of chief executive of TCIO in January.

Shields today said: “I am thrilled for Ben as he re-enters the community as an entrepreneur. I have no doubt Ben will continue to be a powerful catalyst for the continued success and growth of Tech City in his new pursuits.”

Southworth follows Silva as the latest high-profile technology advisor to quit the government. Silva announced earlier this year he was leaving Number 10 to start up his own business.

Prior to working at TCIO, Southworth was a central figure within East London’s ‘silicon roundabout’ community, helping to organise social events through the ‘3 Beards’ group he co-founded.

Tech City is understood to be seeking a replacement with expertise in attracting foreign investment, to help attract overseas funding for London’s start-ups.

Tech City today also announced a partnership with EE, which has launched its superfast 4G internet in East London. As part of the partnership, EE experts will mentor Tech City start-ups.
