Churn, the rate at which subscribers quit, tumbled to a record low of 1% at O2 in the past three months.

This helped Britain’s second-biggest mobiles company increase customer numbers by almost 140,000 and keep revenues steady at £1.39 billion.

Chief executive Ronan Dunne claimed O2 has “the most loyal customers in the sector” thanks to offers such as a £1 lunch on Mondays at restaurants including Domino’s and Upper Crust.

Customer numbers rose 3% to 23.8 million, with operating profits held at £324 million.

Three, the number four player in the UK mobiles market, reported a 3% fall in half-year revenues to £974 million. Active customer numbers rose 6% to eight million.
