Tui Travel said today that its new fleet of Boeing 787s had flown a million passengers this year and helped demand for its long-haul package breaks to soar.

The holiday giant, which has eight Dreamliners with another five due next year, said the fuel-efficient jets allowed it to put on non-stop flights to western Mexico, Mauritius and Thailand which had helped pre-tax profit rise 3% to £475 million for the year to October.

Shares rose more than 3%, or 13.5p, to 442.2p in response.

Tui Travel — reporting its last annual results before its €6.5 billion (£5.1 billion) merger with Germany’s TUI — said that tie-up will accelerate long-term growth.

“The merger will strengthen and future-proof our combined Group,” Tui Travel’s chief executive Peter Long said.

Some of Tui Travel’s other popular new destinations this year were Jamaica, Croatia’s Kalamota Island, and Ibiza.
