EasyJet escapes snow chaos with Gatwick flights

EasyJet today said it had flown 3.7 million passengers in December — 7.6% more than a year earlier — as it avoided the worst of the snow because most of its flights are from Gatwick and Stansted.

The budget airline's figures sharply contrasted with those of British Airways, which is based in snow-struck Heathrow and lost £50 million from the cold snap, and Ryanair.

The Irish airline disappointed analysts with a 2% rise in December passenger numbers to five million yesterday, held back because of closures at Dublin Airport.

Andrew Lobbenberg, analyst at Royal Bank of Scotland, said of easyJet's performance: "This seems to reflect a limited impact from snow as Gatwick and Stansted traded relatively resiliently."
