Britain’s only listed law firm, Gateley, made a killing after untangling Brexit for customers.

The firm, which advised West Ham United on the sale of its Upton Park ground in 2014, made a £4.2 million profit for the six months ending October. Last time it was £2.9 million.

“We have seen the post-Brexit slowdown in London but not in the regions and that is where we are strong,” finance director Neil Smith said.

The best growth came from the private-client and property divisions, which increased revenues 20% and 33%, partly thanks to acquisitions.

Gateley added an extra 24 lawyers in the period, swelling its ranks to 410.

“The legal industry is in a state of change and our view is the pace of change has accelerated recently,” acquisitions director Nick Smith said.

“There’s room in the marketplace for a different kind of operator and a different kind of career opportunity for lawyers.”
