Annual sales at London-founded athleisure retailer Sweaty Betty reached £126.5 million before it was sold to a US firm in the summer, accounts show.

The chain, which has 174 stores and concessions, including 60 in the UK, saw high demand for its products during the pandemic. Stores were closed at points for lockdowns, but its online arm performed well.

The company, which last month launched a second collection with actress Halle Berry, saw turnover reach £126.5m in 2020 from £72.9 million a year earlier.

In August Michigan-based Wolverine Worldwide agreed a $410 million (£300 million )deal for the business.

The strategic report for Sweaty Betty Limited in the latest accounts said: “Performance in 2021 has been strong to date due to the growth across the digital channels with store performance impacted due to the closure from Covid-19. In addition, we will continue to grow our wholesale channel and expand internationally.”

The retailer, which was founded by Tamara Hill-Norton and Simon Hill-Norton, last year saw a number of shoppers remain active during Covid-19 lockdowns, with many people working out at home using Sweaty Betty online fitness videos.
