Morrisons creates 800 jobs with new stores
Hundreds of jobs have been created at three Morrisons supermarkets which opened today, including one in south London.
Morrisons said there were 800 jobs at its stores in Streatham, Dover, and Willenhall in Coventry. Of those, 350 positions were filled by the unemployed. The new jobs include bakery assistants, checkout operators and managers.
The supermarket chain said it was training all its staff for a nationally recognised qualification in retail. The three new stores are part of a nationwide expansion plan, in which the company will increase selling space by one million square feet over three years.
The company said the expansion came off the back of strong Christmas trading figures. Norman Pickavance, the firm's HR director, said: "Every Morrisons employee is given the opportunity of developing their career so they can go from the shop floor to the top floor.
"Of the top executives in the company 30 per cent of them started their career on the shop floor. A critical element of the quality of service we offer to our customers is the investment we make in the training development of our people."
