Trailblazer: Cyrille Regis celebrates winning the FA Cup in 1987 with Coventry City

It was so sad to hear of the death of former England striker Cyrille Regis at the age of 59.

I remember him playing alongside Laurie Cunningham and Brendan Batson at West Brom, and what splendid performances we all enjoyed — whatever the weather. I mention this because, as alluded to in Tony Evans’s excellent tribute [January 15], an “expert” once accused players from Afro-Caribbean backgrounds of not performing well when it was cold, wet and muddy.

I am delighted that we no longer hear such racist and ignorant statements. Much of the credit should go to Regis; his commitment and gentlemanly behaviour helped the game make progress in this area.

How sad that one of the trailblazers for black footballers has been taken away from us. Cyrille Regis was a humble, dignified man who led by example — unlike some who play the beautiful game today.
