Red-letter day: Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn speaks out in the House of Commons
3 July 2017

Why did Labour MPs feel it was necessary, so soon after an encouraging election result, to put down an amendment that had no hope of being passed? It appears that the same crew are showboating again at the expense of party unity.

These MPs stood on the Labour manifesto which clearly outlined its Brexit policy and therefore they can no longer claim they rebelled because their constituents voted Remain in large numbers.

Jeremy Corbyn sacked three of his frontbenchers for backing a call to stay in the single market. Has he read his own manifesto?

It says Labour will scrap the Brexit White Paper and replace it with “fresh negotiating priorities that have a strong emphasis on retaining the benefits of the single market and the customs union”.

With Brexit you are either in or out, a point that frontbenchers and a number of MPs seem to have understood.
