Armed up: soldiers went out on patrol in London after the Manchester bombing
30 May 2017

The goal of a terrorist is to force us all into a siege mentality. In any case, it is almost impossible to have 100 per cent security and anything like it would bring us all to a standstill. It is usual after an attack to have increased security for a few days, then we relax and revert to normal.

Understandably, “extra” security measures are now in place following the Manchester suicide bombing.

But does extra bag-searching do anything apart from reassuring people?

Why is there so much anxiety over having troops on London’s streets?

I remember the last time this happened, in 2012, when the Army stepped in to manage security throughout the Olympics. They did brilliantly, operating with good humour and a sense of calm.

I will continue to travel around London without hesitation and look forward to mingling with the armed forces.
