Showcasing the best in contemporary portrait painting from around the world, the BP Portrait Award has revealed the shortlist for its 2012 prize.

From personal studies of friends and family, to revealing takes on famous face, this year’s exhibition features fifty-five works in a wide variety of styles.

Selected from 2,187 entries the shortlist includes Aleah Chapin for Auntie, Alan Coulson for Richie Culver, Ignacio Estudillo for El abuelo (Augusta Estudillo) and Jamie Routley for Tony Lewis.
