Once again Eddie Murphy climbs into his "fat suit" and, with a surplus of latex and prosthetics, plays five members of his own obese family, the Klumps, plus three other gross characters.
It's cruder and ruder than Nutty Professor I, beginning with an erection joke at the wedding altar, followed by an inflammable flatulence one and highlighted by the plight of a man with a need to defecate like a dog.
Murphy's multiple personalities - all jeering caricatures of Early African-American stereotypes, their big butts, melon-mouth mastication, backwoods illiteracy and gutter vulgarity modulated only by all-talk-at-once unintelligibility - would deservedly provoke a lynching party if it were exposed to a black community by a white man. A film as ethnically degrading as this one scarcely merits reviewing; but it could probably do with picketing.
The story starts when Murphy's nutty prof accidentally lets his alter ego, a hyper-wired bit of malevolence called Buddy Love (played by Murphy in slimline) emerge out of his flab in the college lab. The fellow runs amok and causes all kinds of embarrassments, one of which sees anal rape inflicted on the college president by a monster hamster.
That's at least a cut above what Murphy does to his own race as he squeezes every gross-out gag he can out of black characters who look as if evolution had still to bring them up to the level of the Flintstones.
