Rom-com gone wrong

10 April 2012

In this rather silly, totally superficial film, a bevy of immaculately dressed and coiffed middle-class American women form a book club devoted to the works of Jane Austen.

They all have emotional problems with partners - largely, one suspects, because they are so up themselves. But Jane, through her stories, sorts them out.

Read the books and you'll find true love seems to be the message. Maria Bello, Amy Brenneman, Kathy Baker and Emily Blunt do their best, and so do the equally irritating men in their lives (there's one lesbian pair, too).

This is a rom-com that tries to be sassy and true but ends up ridiculously unlike any kind of reality at all.
