Short Term 12 - film review

Brie Larson is incredible as Grace, a cool and dedicated supervisor at a foster-care facility, but many of the plot turns Destin Cretton's US indie-drama are hard to swallow

Grace (Brie Larson; incredible), is the kind of cool guardian-angel abused children must dream will swoop into their lives. She the supervisor at a foster-care facility and, as the story unfolds, we discover just why the bonds she forms with the kids are so tight.

Many of the plot turns in Destin Cretton's US indie-drama are hard to swallow (one, involving a car, is flat-out absurd). That said, the lo-fi atmosphere feels authentic (fans of Samantha Morton's The Unloved will recognise the vibe). Care workers as dedicated as Grace DO exist. Short Term 12 wants to shine a light on these under-paid, under-valued figures and cheats, just a little, to get the job done.
