Soul Surfer - review

10 April 2012

At 13, Bethany Hamilton had her arm bitten off by a shark in Hawaii. Sean McNamara's film tells how, through her Christian faith and courage, she went back to the sea and surfed again.

AnnaSophia Robb plays her, and Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid are her proud churchgoing parents.

The film is of the Hollywood inspirational genre, with God always just around the corner and a kind of beady sincerity. Clearly Bethany was quite a girl but this film prompts one simply to say "Amen".
