Halle Berry's latest project is a tense, low-budget thriller and centres on Jordan, a sensitive, gutsy 911 operator in crime-ridden LA. Jordan makes an instant connection with teenager Casey (Abigail Breslin), a blonde wannabe brat who gets thrown inside the boot of a car by a serial killer but, luckily, has a spare phone in her back pocket. As Jordan tries to help Casey, the perils of being a good Samaritan become clear.

The Call is the kind of vaguely smart, extremely gory gloop you should watch on TV, preferably when you’re tucked up in bed with a delirium-inducing fever. That way, you won’t notice when the script goes bonkers. Stone-cold sober, in a cinema, the implausible and dodgy denouement will simply cause you to murmur, “Why?”
