The Last Waltz - review

Time has not been good to Martin Scorsese's acclaimed 1978 documentary about The Band (interviews with the Canadian roots rock five-piece and footage of their star-studded 1976 farewell show).

It's fascinating to see sleazy rock machismo up close but the concert itself is torture. Gospel group The Staple Singers make most of the "greats" look like smug mediocrities. True, many are clearly drug-addled or have just picked the wrong song from their back catalogue. But it's symptomatic of a general lack of judgment.
