Trap for Cinderella - film review

Softley is a great director but has maybe let his own obsession – with Sebastien Japrisot's 1962 novel – blind him to the essential lameness of the project
12 July 2013

Young British actress Tuppence Middleton is the new Carey Mulligan; poised and edgy, she makes even cheesy narrative twists seem fresh. Which is lucky, because there are plenty on offer in Iain Softley's psycho-sexual thriller, which is all about an amnesiac heiress. In flashbacks, we see a chance meeting reunite intense child-hood friends, troubled swinging-London photographer, Micky (Middleton), and dull bank-clerk, Do (Alexandra Roach). One look at Do and you can tell she's Obsessed with Micky. One look at Micky and you know she's about to strip... Softley is a great director but has maybe let his own obsession – with Sebastien Japrisot's 1962 novel – blind him to the essential lameness of the project. Someone lend this man a good book.
