New normal: Gilbert and George are sharing videos from lockdown

Artistic duo Gilbert and George are showing us their “new normal” routine as part of White Cube gallery’s lockdown diary series.

Each day for a week, they will share a video from isolation in their home in east London.

So far we’ve seen them adopt a new normal walk and a new normal way to relax, as well as a new normal way to show us the art on their walls.

Gilbert and George, whose motto is “art for all”, have created works throughout their career that aim to challenge elitism in art, regularly appearing as living sculptures themselves.

Speaking to the Standard in an interview in February, Gilbert said: “You have to be an outsider to do art, you can’t be normal.” They also revealed that they don’t have a kitchen in their home (“Why would we have food in the house?”), so we hope they’re getting enough sustenance in isolation.

A number of other artists have already taken part in White Cube’s series, including Tracey Emin and Antony Gormley.
