Trump in the White House, Britain heading out of the EU. Who will help us to make sense of our divided world?

The Script, of course! On album number five the Irish trio best known for sounding like a worse version of The Police, have taken a turn for the political.

“Divided states of America, divided states of the world/If we don’t all stand together, we will fall,” croons Danny O’Donoghue on the platitudinal poprock of Divided States.

As well-meaning as the title track is — it’s essentially an anti-terrorism open letter from guitarist Mark Sheehan to his young son — it’s still a rotter of a song, full of chugging guitars and lyrical guff such as: “Earn your stripes, do your bit, try your luck, just know your s***.”

Truly, the road to musical hell is paved with good intentions.
