Bland new RSC chairman

Sir Christopher Bland is to be the new chairman of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Sir Christopher, 65, chairman of the BT Group and a former chairman of the BBC, was described today as "a real catch" by the RSC's artistic director, Michael Boyd - who has halved the RSC's £2.8 million deficit since his own arrival a year ago.

Sir Christopher will succeed Lord Alexander at a crucial time for the RSC which severed its links with the Barbican two years ago. A decision on its new London base is expected in July.
