Boy Meets Girl, BBC2: Judy and Leo return in Series 2 of transgender comedy-drama

The sitcom is back – and while it’s banal, that seems to be the point

The most interesting thing about Boy Meets Girl isn’t that it’s a comedy-drama centred around a transgender character, played by a trans actor.

What’s more admirable is that the show isn’t necessarily concerned with the ins and outs of being transgender – for Judy and those around her, it’s just another fact of life.

As the show’s second series begins, she is still living a fairly low-key life with Leo in Peggy’s house, though Leo has the offer of a job down in London to consider.

Meanwhile, Pam’s salon might have a rodent infestation, and Peggy is suffering from worrying blackouts which she’s hid from her family.

It’s all gently paced, with a blending of drama and comedy that brings to mind the character-focused stylings of Gavin & Stacey.

While Pam and Peggy take time to try and learn about trans issues and how to help their children’s relationship, Judy’s gender identity isn’t the focus of any major plots – it’s just who she is.

Compared to the sun-kissed LA setting of Amazon’s brilliant BAFTA-winning Transparent, which somewhat controversially does not feature a trans actor in the lead role, what strikes most about Boy Meets Girl is how… banal it is. And in many ways, that’s probably how it should be.
