Ed Miliband has labelled Ed Balls a ‘national treasure’ for his enthusiastic performances on Strictly Come Dancing.

The former shadow chancellor is taking part in the current series of the BBC dancing competition, and most recently performed a samba inspired by Jim Carrey in The Mask.

“He’s brilliant, isn’t he?” praised ex-Labour leader Miliband on Victoria Derbyshire.

He added that Balls has “got better and better” over the last two weeks of live shows.

Watching a clip of Balls on the dancefloor wearing luminous green face paint and a vibrant yellow suit in keeping with The Mask theme, Derbyshire seemed to agree.

“He’s definitely thrown himself into it a little bit more,” she said. “He looks slightly less embarrassed.”

Miliband said Balls is a “national treasure” – but it doesn’t sound like he’ll be donning a sparkly costume himself in the near future.

"I'm not going to paint my face green anytime soon, but, you know, it suits him, let me say," he said.

Strictly judge Darcey Bussell said Balls’ samba was “100% crazy” and “fabulous”, while head judge Len Goodman told him: “You’re not the best dancer but you’re definitely the most fun.”
