This Morning presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield joked about the fate of Mystic Marcus after England’s gutting extra-time defeat to Croatia.

As viewers of ITVs flagship will know, Mystic Marcus the predicting pig has been backing the Three Lions every step of the tournament, also championing the team to roar to victory against Croatia.

But, as we know, it wasn’t meant to be – and the presenters were keen to call the micropig out on his porkies.

Last night, the official Twitter account for the show posted a picture of a bacon sandwich with the caption: “We'll just leave this here...#ENGCRO #CROvENG #SorryMarcus.”

And Thursday’s show opened with a desolate-looking Willoughby flicking through a pile of newspapers – all carrying similar front pages – before Schofield called out to her from the kitchen.

He said: “Holly…Bacon’s ready,” as he looked down at the sizzling pan before the opening credits showed a menu board asking if anybody wanted a bacon sandwich.

Poor, poor Marcus.

But Schofield soon assured fans: “Marcus is fine…he will live to predict another day. We may have been wrong, but we did really well do get through to the semi-final.

The psychic animal appeared via video link on Wednesday’s show, walking towards a pile of apples emblazoned with the England flag before tucking in.

Content, Willoughby squealed with delight at Marcus’ prediction but is now no longer a fan of the animal.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10.30am on ITV.
