The presenters couldn't hide their shock during the debate

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield tried to shut down a debate with three men who believe the Earth is flat – and that Tim Peake lied about going to space.

The trio of men appeared on Wednesday’s This Morning to discuss why they believe the world isn’t round and claimed that people who have been to space are just "lying".

Gary Heather, Darren Nesbit and Martin Kenny left the presenters shocked as they repeated their theories, with the men arguing that they had carried out laser-based tests to prove the Earth is flat.

And Willoughby was left stunned when they claimed her interview with Peake must have been fake and that the astronaut was “in a studio somewhere”.

Willoughby said: “One of the highlights of my career was interviewing Major Tim Peake, up on the international space station. Now, you see he brought in his beautiful book, you see the curvature of the Earth, you very clearly see that it's a circle.

"Now are you telling me, this interview with him - I'm just talking to someone that's just made that up or someone who's not actually there?

The flat earthers replied: “He is not in out of space. He is in a Hollywood type studio... maybe like here where we are now

"You would never call someone a liar. Is Brian Cox mistaken? Yes, as is 99% of the world,” he added after being showed a clip of Cox slamming their theory.

Unable to hold his feelings in, Schofield put an end to the discussion and told them: “You are all bonkers!” when the men asked if they should come back to the show at some point.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10.30am on ITV.
