Piers Morgan is a polarising media figure – but his new documentary Killer Women has an undeniable hook.

As Episode 1 begins, we hear him interview a sweet young American woman who sings a rendition of Amazing Grace, before the voiceover of her therapist kicks in: “I’ve never come across anyone as dangerous as Erin and I hope I never do.”

It’s a gripping opener to a subject that’s often difficult to fathom.

At the age of 16, Erin Caffey murdered her mother and two brothers, and tried to murder her father. She had three accomplices, including her boyfriend, and is now 24 having been in prison for around eight years.

If her sentence remains as it is, she’ll be in prison until she’s 60.

“It’s all about choices, and the choices I made at a young age,” she tells Morgan, speaking coldly about what happened.

For someone who came from a good background with a bright future ahead of her, it’s difficult to comprehend why she would take such extreme actions – and she’s difficult to read even now.

“When I look back on it now, this was all just stupid,” she says, a word that seems insufficient. “I mean, for what? [My family] weren’t beating me, they weren’t starving me to death, I had it made.”

It’s a disturbing story, and one that even Piers-phobics might find themselves caught up in.
