Paul Mescal has bagged himself a well-deserved Emmy nomination – but fans have been left stunned that his Normal People co-star, Daisy Edgar-Jones, failed to get an awards nod.

Mescal, 24, won a legion of fans for his sensitive portrayal of chain-wearing Connell Waldron in the hugely popular BBC series, seeing the actor going up against acting veterans Jeremy Irons and Hugh Jackman in the category for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for the 2020 Emmys.

However, Edgar-Jones, who played Marianne Sheridan, did not receive a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited series, nor did Normal People as a programme receive a nod.

The Emmy Nomination announcements lead to several fans of the emotional drama taking to Twitter to vent their frustration that the 22-year-old actress was not recognised for her fantastic work on the series.

One person said it was one of the “best TV performances they ever got to witness”.

One fan said Edgar-Jones missing out was “sick and twisted”.

A third wrote that Edgar-Jones played the part “perfectly”.

Others wished Mescal luck, but noted that Edgar-Jones was equally as worthy of a nomination.

Edgar-Jones previously said it “would mean everything” should Normal People receive any nominations at the Emmy’s.

“It’s been so strange because I guess I’ve kind of recently travelled the world in this small box on my computer…,” she said to ABC Audio. “So it would be mad to kind of go to the Emmys from my bedroom.”

As well as Mescal’s nomination, Normal People received three other nods: director Lenny Abrahamson received a nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special, where Alice Birch and Sally Rooney received a nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special.

Casting director Louise Kiely was also recognised, as she received a nomination for Outstanding Casting for a Limited Series, Movie or Special.

Elsewhere, HBO series Watchmen is leading the charge at the awards ceremony having received 24 nods, while Hollywood heavyweights Olivia Colman and Jennifer Aniston are set to go head-to-head in the Best Actress category.
