Aidan Turner will reprise his role as Poldark for a third series, the BBC has confirmed.

The actor will return as Ross Poldark in the Cornish drama, despite rumours suggesting he would step down to become the next James Bond.

Confirming a third series executive producer Elizabeth Kilgarriff said: “Series two promises to take the audience on another fantastic rollercoaster ride and we’re thrilled to know that the story won’t end there."

Damien Timmer, the director of Mammoth Screen, the maker of the series, said: "Poldark is a passion project for all of us, and it's with real excitement that we prepare for both the launch of series two and our return to Cornwall to shoot series three.

"Winston Graham and Debbie Horsfield's extraordinary flair for storytelling means the saga of Ross, his friends and enemies will go to even more thrilling places."

The third series will cover the fifth and sixth novels in the collection.

The BBC drama was one of the most talked about TV shows of 2015 and pulled in over 9 million viewers and sent social media into a meltdown when Turner’s character was seen scything topless.

But fans may be left disappointed as show bosses confirmed the 10-part second series will see Turner keep his shirt on.

Speaking at an event, writer Debbie Horsfield said: “Unfortunately autumn is very chilly in Cornwall, so he won’t be doing any in that.”

Eleanor Tomlinson will return as Poldark's wife Demelza for series two which will also welcome new faces including Midsomer Murders actor John Nettles, W1A’s Hugh Skinner, and Gabriella Wilde of Endless Love fame.

Poldark will return to TV screens in September.
