Russell Brand has thrown his hat into the ring to take over from Len Goodman on Strictly Come Dancing.

The comedian, 43, joked that he is keen to take on the role of head judge on the BBC ballroom show after his friend and fellow comic Noel Fielding was announced as the new host of The Great British Bake Off.

Brand tweeted: “Right. If @noelfielding11 can do Bake Off I'm replacing Len on Strictly.”

Fielding replied: “Representing goths in the mainstream x x x.”

The Mighty Boosh star will host the popular baking show alongside Sandi Toksvig when it moves to Channel 4 later this year.

The duo have replaced former hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, while Prue Leith will join Paul Hollywood after Mary Berry refused a move to the rival broadcaster.

Speaking about his new role Fielding said: “GBBO is one of my favourite shows. I’ve always loved brightly coloured cakes and Sandi Toksvig so this is a dream come true for me! It’s basically the double.”

One Twitter user posted: “Noel Fielding to be the new Bake Off host fills me with many different feelings! Mostly confusing over his being paired with Sandi Toksvig?!”

Another wrote: “Noel Fielding is a horrendous choice. He's Marmite. You don't put Marmite in cakes.”

A third posted: “Noel Fielding Bake Off sounds like one of the worst ideas in the history of television.”

Others welcomed the news with one tweeting: “Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding for Bake-Off is an infinite improvement on Mel and Sue. There. I said it. #GBBO.”
