Simon Cowell will take over from Howard Stern on the new series of American's Got Talent.

The music mogul, who created the show’s original format and is an executive producer, will return to the panel for the 11th season.

In a statement released on Thursday, Cowell said: “I am really thrilled to be joining ‘America’s Got Talent’ next season.

“What I love about this show is that it’s open to absolutely anyone.”

He added: “America has some fantastic talent just waiting to be discovered, and I would like that talent to come to our show, including any dogs who can sing!”

Cowell, who recently returned to the UK version of The X Factor, will be replacing Stern who announced that he was quitting the show last month.

NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt added: “Simon knows this format better than anyone and he’s been producing the show with us since the beginning, so we’re thrilled to have him to step in front of the camera and take his rightful place at the head of the judges’ panel.

“We welcome him to the on-screen NBC family.”

This will mark Cowell’s return to US screens since appearing on the American version of The X Factor, which was cancelled in 2013.
