Piers Morgan was left red-faced after he made a grammar gaffe on live TV as he attempted to declare his love for Susanna Reid.

Morgan – who is an ardent fan of pointing out spelling and grammar mistakes on Twitter – appeared to forget how to use apostrophes as he took part in a mock Love Actually skit to mark his final day on Good Morning Britain.

The opinionated broadcaster, 53, held up a sign reading: “Susanna your the best thing that ever happened to me.”

Viewers took pleasure in pointing out that the correct spelling should have been “you’re”.

Reid looked equally as elated at highlighting Morgan’s error as she circled the word “your”.

One viewer tweeted: “@piersmorgan #GMB Piers... the cards... it’s “you’re” not “your” *tsk *tsk.”

Another wrote: “@piersmorgan there was a spelling mistake on one of your boards at the end of today’s show - shame on you.”

Morgan held up the Love Actually-style signs as Catty Pearson performed an acoustic version of Silent Night.

He told viewers he would “tell the truth” at Christmas before joking that he thinks “vegans are perfect” and that he “once wore a papoose,” which was a reference to the backlash he sparked after claiming a man using the body-sling is emasculating.

The segment came minutes after he told viewers he was forced to take himself to the hospital over his cold.

He said: “Doctor Hilary yesterday diagnosed me and said, ‘Don't worry you're over the worst’.

“I ended up in hospital yesterday and got diagnosed with bronchitis, laryngitis and sinusitis. Thanks Hilary.”

Morgan will return to breakfast TV in January.

Good Morning Britain is on ITV, weekdays at 6am
