Canary Wharf's new Crossrail station will include a semi-open balcony where diners will be able to sit and look over the water, it was revealed today.

The six-storey building, due to open in May next year, three years before the station, will cover the platform area and will include shops, bars, restaurants and other leisure facilities.

Among the first places to open will be the Everyman Cinema — the first in east London — a Sports Bar and Grill and Poncho 8, a Mexican restaurant.

When combined with the recent Jubilee Place shopping centre extension, the 115,000 sq ft development is one of the largest retail expansions being built in Britain.

Canary Wharf will be one of the largest Crossrail stations, with retail areas on four of the six floors, and a landscaped park, restaurant and community facility on the top floor, which will be covered by a timber lattice roof that will allow views over the dock.

It will provide a link between Canary Wharf and Poplar and links to the Canary Wharf estate — via Adam’s Place — and the Jubilee line and DLR stations.

Retailers today revealed that they were delighted to have been offered venues in the building.

Andrew Myers, CEO of Everyman Media Group, said: “We hope that the Everyman concept will become a real hub of entertainment at the new Crossrail development at Canary Wharf. It will definitely add to and offer something extra special to the Canary Wharf community.”

Nick Birkett, co-owner of Poncho 8, said: “To be selected as the only Mexican operator in the Canary Wharf Crossrail development is very exciting. It will be our flagship store.”

Camille Waxer, chief administrative officer for Canary Wharf Group, said: “Everyman Cinema, Sports Bar & Grill and Poncho 8 are key brands we’ve been targeting, as they will add enjoyment and diversity to the growing portfolio of retail and leisure outlets. It’s very important for us to offer a varied experience to our loyal customers and we look forward to welcoming them at the new Crossrail development, opening in May 2015.”
