Picture it: Horniman at Hay's
10 April 2012

The Horniman is a huge pub built in a refurbished wharf renamed Hay's Galleria. It is quite picturesque in an olde worlde industrial way and consequently attracts a lot of the tourists passing on the way to Tower Bridge or the Globe.

The pub is large and sprawls over the ground floor of one side of the wharf on the riverside. It has had a tiled, Victoriana-Turkish bath style makeover which is not too convincing. However, the pub and its surrounding area manage to accommodate the crowds without feeling stretched so it doesn't get uncomfortable, although Fridays are pretty manic.

It has two extra areas, the downstairs Wharfside Cellar Bar and the upstairs Mezzanine for dining, along with a spot outside with views of the Thames. Service can be slow at busy times, resulting in a thirsty wait; at least the range of drink is solid, with us counting five ales on tap. If it is not mobbed it is worth popping in when you are on the way to the tourist sites in the area.
