Brixton is not like other parts of London; it just isn't. Its noises, colours and smells are a mix of countless cultures stewed up into something entirely its own. It does its own thing: in some corners, you can still find people talking about its own currency, the Brixton Pound. The market is still the place to uncover a new favourite. There's a reason why Brixton is always busy.

As the area has shaken off the rougher edges of its image, more and more pubs and bars have moved in. Only a few years ago, Brixton's cocktail scene was almost non-existent; now, while it's not heaving with bars the way Soho or Shoreditch is, it's not short of places for a decent drink. Our choices below are listed in no particular order.
