By gastropub standards The Fire Stables is now something of a veteran, and it is a veteran that has won its share of awards.

Even in busy Wimbledon the bar does good trade, and the spacious restaurant also prospers.

The chairs are comfortable and the tables big enough, the high ceiling and large windows give a spacious feel, the floor is made of painted floorboards - in short everything is 'gastropubnormal'.

The menu changes daily and the food is well presented and reasonably priced.

Starters range from fennel and potato soup to a foie gras and chicken liver parfait w red onion marmalade.

You may have spotted the typographical idiosyncrasy, which wears pretty thin pretty quickly.

They don't write 'with' at The Fire Stables; what they put is 'w'.

So you get duck spring rolls w teriyaki dressing - this could get irritating by the time you get to farmhouse cheeses w Bath Olivers.

Other starters may include smoked chicken and mango salad, or tomato, mozzarella and red onion tart.

Among the main courses may be pumpkin risotto; slow-roast belly pork w mash; stuffed leg of rabbit wrapped in prosciutto w new potatoes; spaghettini w smoked salmon and chervil cream; and sea bass w roast fennel and potato salad.

Puds are desirable if predictable numbers: bread-and-butter pudding; sticky toffee pudding w vanilla ice cream; pear and almond tart w crème fraÎche; and baked cheesecake w raspberry coulis.
