Character: Jenny Lo's Teahouse

The Betjeman Arms
Diwana Bhel Poori House

Jenny Lo's Teahouse
14 Eccleston Street, SW1 (020 7259 0399, jennylo.co.uk)
At this "tea house" near Victoria station you'll get well-made meal-in-a-bowl dishes, some featuring noodles and some rice. As quick and cheap as any chain noodle shop but with more character.

Galvin Café À Vin
35 Spital Square, E1 (020 7299 0404, galvinrestaurants.com)
Very good French bistro food near Liverpool Street station, classic dishes, an old-fashioned eye for quality and a forgiving wine list.

Masters Superfish
191 Waterloo Road, SE1 (020 7928 6924)
Taxi drivers have a keen eye for no-nonsense, no-frills dining, which may be why those working Waterloo station pack into Masters Superfish for meal breaks. Very good fish and chips in traditional style. Slick service.
