Jose Mourinho concerned by Tottenham players' 'wrong state of mind' in Everton loss

Jose Mourinho is concerned by his "lazy" Tottenham side after they were beaten 1-0 by Everton in their Premier League opener, insisting some players had the "wrong state of mind."

The three-time Premier League winner was handed a first opening day defeat in his Premier League career, a thumping header from Dominic Calvert-Lewin the only goal of the game.

Mourinho handed debuts to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Matt Doherty but the pair were unable to inspire a lacklustre Tottenham team, while Dele Alli was substituted at half-time for "tactical" reasons.

Though Everton, consisting of debutants James Rodriguez, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure, were mightily impressive, they were aided by a sub-par Tottenham team, with Mourinho left disappointing by his side's poor pressing game.

"Against good teams like Everton if you let them play from the back they are comfortable with very good technical players," Mourinho told BBC Sport. "If you don't press them you give them ammunition.

"We were lazy in our pressing. That is a consequence of bad fitness, bad pre-season. Some players didn't even have a pre-season. Some players had a wrong state of mind. I don't want to speak about it - I'm not sure about it.

"It was too easy for them to play from back to front.

"Technically it was not so easy because some players didn't have a pre-season for different reasons. We had two days with everybody. Two days before the game is not where you can work too much."

Though Mourinho admitted it was Everton who dominated the match, he also believed their goal should not have stood.

After being awarded a free kick in the Tottenham half, Lucas Digne clearly took the set-piece from significantly further forward than where the initial foul took place.

Mourinho added: "The goal shouldn't be possible when you have six referees and VAR - to let a free-kick be taken five or six metres in front because it's a huge difference."

There was one positive for Mourinho, however, who said he is looking forward to speaking freely in the dressing room with no Amazon cameras around.

"I'm disappointed with my team." he said. "My message is inside [the dressing room]. I'm so happy no more Amazon because these things can stay between us."
