With snow hitting parts of the UK already this week, the festive season is creeping up faster than you can say Merry Christmas.

December is always a flurry of Christmas parties, drinks with friends and a steady flow of people coming in and out of your home.

And we've all had that panic when an aunt suddenly turns up on your doorstep unannounced, expectant and famished.

These days Christmas nibbles don't just have to be tasty, they have to look good on the ‘Gram, as Lexie Mackintosh, Product Developer at Sainsbury’s, explains.

“When it comes to Christmas snacking, we know our customers are looking for giftability and shareability – treats they can send to friends, whether that’s in person or through photos on social media.

“The unicorn trend continues, particularly for snacks and sweet treats, so we’ve created unicorn bark with shimmering silver stars and pink glitter sugar sprinkles. Perfect for a stocking filler, or indeed an Instagram post!”

We've rounded up the best snacks to keep in the cupboard for hungry unexpected guests to enjoy with a cuppa.

Cute iced reindeer cookies from Marks & Spencer, priced at £2, will delight both adults and children alike.

For the Christmas purists, make sure you have a mince pies tucked away in the cupboard.

Asda's Extra Special mince pies, priced at £1.50 for six and pictured above, have a great pastry-to-mincemeat ratio.
