Keen to upgrade security at their nine-bedroom Cotswolds farmhouse, David and Victoria Beckham have reportedly applied for planning permission to dig a new basement.

In their application, the England football icon and his Spice Girl-turned-fashion designer wife explain that they want to build “beneath the extension to the existing garage outbuilding with a linked walkway”.

If the plans get the go-ahead, the power couple can start work on creating what is effectively an underground escape tunnel from the £6 million main house in Oxfordshire. They also want to use the new space as a wine cellar.

The Beckhams have swapped their London residence to spend lockdown at their country retreat with sons Romeo, 17, Cruz, 15, and daughter Harper, eight.

Eldest son Brooklyn, 21, is isolating in New York with his girlfriend, the American actress Nicola Peltz.
