A simple win for fashion graduate

'Bold': A model struts down the catwalk in one of Rory Longdon's winning designs

The "bold" idea of producing clothes people can wear earned a designer top prize last night at Graduate Fashion Week, an event best known for its associations with three-legged trousers and romper-suits made from plastic bags.

Rory Longdon took the gold award at Earls Court for his wholly wearable collection of clean-cut but striking black and silver knitwear. Judge Amanda Wakeley praised his "bold yet inherently simple idea".

Longdon, from Nottingham Trent University, beat off fierce competition from Jungo Kuroiwa, a womenswear designer at UCA Epsom.

Marissa Owen, of the University of Central Lancashire, won the best womenswear prize with a playful collection including a high-collared oriental-print padded jacket. The best menswear award went to Edinburgh College of Art's Felix Chabluk Smith, who charmed with his clever use of silhouettes and displayed masterful tailoring skills.
