Cradling his new-born daughter in his arms, Tiger Woods looks every inch the caring father.

The world's number one golfer had previously said he would miss a major competition to witness the birth of his first child.

But in the end his wife Elin gave birth to Sam Alexis Woods less than 24 hours after he narrowly missed out on the U.S. Open title last week.

Calling it a "special time", Woods has said the birth of his daughter might affect how much golf he plays in the future.

On his official website, he wrote: "Both Elin and Sam are doing well and resting peacefully.

"We want to thank our doctors and the hospital staff for all their dedicated and hard work.

"This is truly a special time in our lives and we look forward to introducing Sam to our family and friends over the next few weeks."

Earlier this month 31-year-old Woods said: "I'm pacing myself already just because of the fact that I have a baby coming up.

"I don't know how much I'm going to play after that or how much I'm going to play before that.

"A lot of that is depending on what happens and the health of Elin and our child."
