Airport workers vote to strike

12 April 2012

WORKERS at Manchester airport, Britain's third busiest, have voted to strike in a row over job cuts among security staff, transport union T&G said.

The union said the airport planned to cut safety, security and labour costs by 30%, including around 140 job losses.

'We feel that is taking unnecessary risks, particularly after September 11 and warnings that Britain could be at risk of terrorist attacks,' it said. No dates have been set for any strike action, the T&G said.

A spokewoman for Manchester airport confirmed the 140 job cuts out of a total of around 700 security staff, saying: 'We were reorganising security even before September 11. Security is a top issue for us, but we want to use our resources better.'
