Amazon books new web place

Nick Goodway12 April 2012

ONLINE bookseller Amazon has launched Marketplace, its second-hand and collectable books and goods operation, on its British and German websites. UK managing director Robin Terrell said: 'This is a major part of our mission to be the place to buy anything online.'

Marketplace, launched in the US in November 2000, accounted for just 1% of US sales in the final quarter of that year but that had grown to 15% by the fourth quarter of 2001. Terrell said: 'Marketplace is a high-margin business for us. We charge sellers 15% commission and have no fulfilment costs because it is up to them to deliver the goods they sell.'

Marketplace sits alongside Amazon's new goods websites. So if, for example, you search for a boxed, adult-edition set of the four Harry Potter novels, you are offered them at Amazon's new price of £17.50 or secondhand from The Bookman's Fine Library at £15. This compares with the publisher's price of £25.
