A shop worker remains in a serious condition in hospital after he was shot during a robbery at a cash-and-carry in south London.

Colin Thomas, 24, was shot at point-blank range with a shotgun after he challenged a group of masked men stealing jewellery from glass cabinets in Costco in Croydon on Thursday night.

He chased the thieves, who had burst into the shop with guns and hammers on Thursday night and forced shoppers and staff to the floor, but was shot with a sawn-off shotgun as they escaped.

The robbers, who wore hoods, scarves and dark clothing, are believed to have fled on foot. Police are examining CCTV footage from the store.

Mr Thomas had been fighting for his life in hospital but police said that he is now in a serious, but stable condition.
