Bill for shop crime soars to £2.25bn

A British shop is robbed once every four seconds, crime figures reveal today.

The average shop dealt with 30 offences last year, from shoplifting to fraud and even armed robbery - up by 20 per cent on the previous year.

Last year's bill for shop crime was £2.25billion, the equivalent of £100 a week for every household in the country, says the survey by the British Retail Consortium, which represents thousands of shopkeepers.
