Boris Johnson in last ditch appeal to halt Boxing Day tube strike

Boris Johnson today appealed to the TUC leader to help stop the "monstrous" train strike set for Boxing Day.

He phoned Brendan Barber saying he would reconsider how many drivers were needed if the TUC would lean on Aslef to negotiate and prevent damage to crucial High Street sales.

"This Aslef strike is monstrous," said the Mayor. "It has been clear ever since the Gregorian calendar was reformed in the mid 18th Century that Boxing Day 2010 would fall on a Sunday. So why do they demand more money with three weeks to go? They are breaking the deal and trying it on."
