Bosnia refuses to give Angelina Jolie film visa

12 April 2012

Acrress Angelina Jolie has reportedly been denied a visa to film her new movie in Bosnia amid protests by rape victims who object to its alleged subject matter.

It was recently rumoured that the 35-year-old actress, pictured, who is directing the movie, had been denied a filming permit because the law requires a screenplay to be attached to the application and one had not.

It has reportedly now been sent to the culture ministry.

Bosnian culture minister Gavrilo Grahovac revoked Jolie's permit this week under pressure from the Association of Women, Victims of War that represents the several thousand mainly Muslim Bosnian women who were raped during the 1992-95 war.

The head of the association, Bakira Hasecic, said she had not read the script but "from what I heard, it is about a victim in a rape camp falling in love with her rapist, and that's not only impossible but the idea is insulting."

"We, the victims, do not want to be portrayed that way and we complained," she said.

But Jolie today said she wanted to meet wartime rape victims and clarify misunderstandings over her film.

"There are many twists in the plot that address the sensitive nature of the relationship between the main characters, and that will be revealed once the film is released," she said. "My hope is that people will hold judgment until they have seen the film."
